Passenger died after falling from assistance lift at Edinburgh Airport

A probe has been launched by Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the public body responsible for workplace safety.

A pensioner died after falling from a special assistance lift at Edinburgh Airport, it has emerged.

It is understood the 81-year-old man plunged from the lift onto the tarmac while being helped off a plane on 28 November last year.

The man was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he died a week later on 7 December.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport said: "We are aware of the death of an 81-year-old man following a fall at Edinburgh Airport.

"We offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

"At this time we are cooperating fully with regulatory authorities in their investigations."

Police Scotland said a report into the death will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal but there are "no suspicious circumstances".

The force spokesperson added: "The Health and Safety Executive have been advised."
