A man has been charged with attempted murder after a police officer was critically injured in a hit-and-run incident.

PC Christopher Burnham suffered a fractured skull, a bleed on the brain and a shattered knee after he attempted to stop a Mini in Coventry last Wednesday.

The married father-of-two, who has served with West Midlands Police for 25 years, is still in hospital where he remains critically ill.

Tekle Lennox, 37, of no fixed abode, has been charged with attempted murder, driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance.

He is due to appear before Coventry Magistrates Court on Monday, West Midlands Police said.

Chief Superintendent Mike O'Hara said PC Burnham is "very well-regarded" by colleagues and faces a "long road to recovery".

He is being supported by relatives, his wife and 10-year-old son.

PC Burnham is the second West Midlands Police officer to be run over while on duty in just a matter of weeks.

A thief in a hijacked BMW struck PC Gareth Phillips in Birmingham in August, causing life-changing injuries including a shattered pelvis.

Mubashar Hussain has since admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent to resist arrest after pinning the traffic officer under his own vehicle.
