Peter Kay is returning to the stage after announcing new dates for his Dance For Life charity discos in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Kay, one of the UK's best-loved comedians, will be spinning discs at three-hour charity dance parties in Manchester, Liverpool and London this April and May.

The shows, announced on Twitter, mark his comeback as a performer, almost three years after he cancelled his first live tour in eight years because of "unforeseen family circumstances".

The 46-year-old was due to tour the country for more than a year from April 2017 - starting in Birmingham - but pulled out of the gigs.

Kay, whose last Dance For Life shows were in 2016, called it "an incredible experience" and urged people to donate by organising sponsorship, the Chortle website said.

He added: "I've honestly never had so much fun as I had working on Dance For Life. The atmosphere was so happy and positive.

"It really is a great way to raise money for the worthiest of causes. All people have to do is turn up and dance."

Two tour dates will be at London's famous Alexandra Palace - and the British Comedy Guide website says there will also be an "Easter spectacular" in Manchester and a two-night residency in Liverpool.

Caro Evans, director of partnerships at Cancer Research UK, said: "We need as many people as possible to join Peter and make a difference by dancing the night away."

Tickets are £28.50 each and fancy dress is encouraged.

The star of Car Share and Phoenix Nights had largely disappeared from view, but in December, he criticised a Channel 5 documentary on him.

He told more than 750,000 fans on Twitter he had nothing to do with Peter Kay Comedy Genius: In His Own Words, calling the title "incredibly misleading".
