Police Scotland say man's death in Rutherglen was 'suspicious' after mass disturbance

Officers were called to Farmeloan Road in Rutherglen at around 7pm on Tuesday. Police Scotland said a number of people were involved in the disturbance.

A man has died following a mass disturbance in a South Lanarkshire street.

Officers were called to Farmeloan Road in Rutherglen at around 7pm on Tuesday.

A 38-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Scotland said the death is being treated as "suspicious" and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances.

The force said a 39-year-old man had been arrested and charged in connection with possessing an offensive weapon.

He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Enquiries have so far revealed that a number of people were involved in this incident and anyone with any information is encouraged to come forward."

Police put closures in place on Farmeloan Road and Victoria Street. Drivers are being urged to use an alternative route.
