A holiday resort used as a location in the film Holiday On The Buses has shut down with immediate effect.

Pontins in Prestatyn, North Wales, closed its doors for the last time on Thursday after more than five decades.

The camp featured in the last of the On The Buses film trilogy, a spin-off of the television sitcom, in 1973.

In a statement on Thursday, Pontins UK Family Holiday Parks said its parks in Prestatyn and Camber Sands in East Sussex would be closing "with immediate effect".

"Customers whose bookings will be affected by these closures will be contacted by our team and refunded," it added.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Dr James Davies, MP for the Vale of Clwyd, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the announcement was "unexpected".

"I am requesting further information from the owners, Britannia Hotels," he added.

"The site has had a bad reputation for some time and I hope this news brings the potential for welcome change to benefit the town."

Vale of Clwyd Senedd member, Gareth Davies, said the closure was "sad and sudden" but "unsurprising in many ways".

"My thoughts are with the staff, their families and all involved with Pontins Prestatyn at this difficult time," he added.
