Police in Rome say a man has confessed to murdering his sister following the discovery of a pair of severed legs in a rubbish bin.

The human remains were discovered by a woman rummaging through a waste bin on Tuesday evening, and a head and torso were later discovered in rubbish elsewhere in the Italian capital.

Suspected victim Nicoletta Diotallevi, 59, has been missing since 14 August.

Her brother Maurizio Diotallevi, 62, was questioned by police after the find on Wednesday, before confessing.

"In front of the magistrate, Diotallevi admitted being the one who committed the murder and who attempted to hide the body," a police statement said.

Media reports said a CCTV camera at a nearby shop recorded a man on Monday night throwing something into the bin.

The legs had been severed at the groin and there was initially no trace of the rest of the body, making identification of the victim difficult. However, the head and torso were found later on.
