At least four people died in England and Wales as Storm Bert brought severe flooding to many parts of the country over the weekend.

In Rhondda Cynon Taf, between 200 and 300 properties were affected by the flooding at the weekend, according to the leader of the council.

Meanwhile, in Monmouthshire, a landslip in Cwmtillery was confirmed to have come from a coal tip.

Speaking to Sky News, leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf council Andrew Morgan questioned why a red weather warning had not been issued for the area ahead of the storm.

On Tuesday, Wales's first minister Eluned Morgan acknowledged people needed "better warning" on flooding.

"I accept that people need better warning and that is something clearly that will need to be discussed with NRW [Natural Resources Wales] and the Met Office," she told Senedd members during First Minister's Questions.

Sally Davies, duty tactical manager at NRW, said the agency uses the modelling and forecasts available to it to ensure it is "prepared and ready to respond".

She added NRW worked with partners to "reduce the risk to people and communities" and issued flood alerts and warnings "giving people advance warning that flooding was possible".

A Met Office spokesperson said Storm Bert was "well forecast", with its first warnings issued on Wednesday, before the system reached the UK.

The spokesperson added rainfall totals were "broadly in line with the forecast and the severe weather warnings issued in advance".
