Boys charged after suspected chemical attack at Surbiton train station

Two police officers were taken to hospital after the incident and seven others were checked over by paramedics.

Two teenagers have been charged over a suspected chemical attack at a train station in southwest London on Friday.

The boys, aged 14 and 16, cannot be named for legal reasons. They have been charged with possession of a corrosive substance in a public place, the British Transport Police said.

Officers were at Surbiton station at around 4.20pm on Friday when they noticed two people acting suspiciously.

When police approached them, they were exposed to a substance believed to be alkaline.

Two officers taken to hospital after the incident have since been discharged. A further seven, including two from the Metropolitan Police, were checked by paramedics.

The teenagers will appear at Wimbledon magistrates' court on Monday.
