Your thoughts

Is Thomas Tuchel the right choice?

Here are a few more of your thoughts...

Why on earth have the FA appointed the German Tuchel? He was abysmal at Chelsea even struggled with Bayern Munich there are much better managers around, obviously they FA don't want to win anything

Tony

Sir Alf Ramsey will be crying. Rivalries don't exist no more. England Germany in the knockouts should be fun though.

Given his short fuse and the unrelenting scrutiny that all England manager have. How long do you think he's going to last?

If there isn't a 'top' English manager available, you appoint the best person who is. This is Thomas Tuchel. Let's get behind him and see the 3 Lions roar to World Cup success.

FA: Some wanted the job more than others

FA CEO Mark Bullingham was asked whether any of the 10 candidates interviewed turned down the opportunity to become the England boss.

"Clearly some were more up for the role than others," he said.

"But we were absolutely delighted to end up with Thomas.

"We believe he gives us the best chance of winning the World Cup so we believe we got the best candidate for the job."

Tuchel avoided Man Utd questions

Thomas Tuchel had been strongly linked with Manchester United before taking the England job.

Asked earlier about those reports and why he chose England specifically, Tuchel said: "The idea and the way Mark and John presented it was very fast, very exciting, very confidential and trustful.

"It was very straightforward. This was a decision for this job and not a decision against anyone else.

"I will not comment on any other clubs."

Tuchel news conference ends

Thomas Tuchel's unveiling as the new England boss is over.

The German appeared relaxed and confident, and didn't seem phased by any of the questions posed to him by the small army of reporters gathered at Wembley this afternoon.

He spoke glowingly of the speed and handling of his appointment by the FA, and we learned that the organisation interviewed approximately 10 candidates before signing Tuchel last Tuesday - successfully keeping the news under wraps until yesterday.

The former Bayern and Chelsea boss navigated tricky questions about the length of his contract, the national anthem and his own nationality with relative ease, and a smile rarely left his face.

Will Harry Kane still be captain?

Thomas Tuchel is asked whether he spoke with Harry Kane before taking the England job and whether he will still be captain under his management.

The German signed Kane for Bayern Munich and managed him for a single season last year.

Tuchel says it's "too early to answer these kinds of questions" on whether Kane will remain Three Lions skipper.

"You know how highly I think and feel for Harry and how much effort I made to bring him to Bayern Munich," he adds.

"He is already on his way to being a legend in English football.

"But now I think it's very important to give the respect to Lee [Carsley] and the upcoming camp in November to take his decisions free and without me interfering.

"And then we will answer this question at the latest in March."

He also says he did not speak with anyone outside of the hiring process before taking the job.

"I did not speak to Harry and I did not speak to Gareth [Southgate]," he says.

"I never normally do this. I want to get my own points of view and let it sink in and reflect on it."

Will you sing the national anthem?

Thomas Tuchel is still taking questions from reporters, and is asked if he will sing the national anthem in his new role.

Interim manager Lee Carsley (who represented Ireland as a player) didn't sing the anthem, saying he made the decision because he was focused on the game ahead.

Tuchel says it is a personal decision and he hasn't made his mind up yet.

"I have not made my decision yet, I want to be very honest with you," he adds, describing the national anthem as "very moving".

"I will always show my respect to my new role, to the country, and of course to a very moving anthem, but... I will take a little bit of time for this decision."

Why only an 18-month contract?

Will Thomas Tuchel only have one crack at a major tournament?

That's what his contract would suggest - given it lasts for only 18 months.

Only the World Cup in the US falls within that period in terms of major tournaments.

"It's 18 months and then we agreed to sit together and we see," Tuchel says.

He jokes that he has had a good record with just 18 months with his previous club jobs.

"In this particular case, it was important for me to have a [time]frame around it because it's a little bit [of] a step into the unknown," he says.

"We are here to work on the best possible outcome for World Cup 26 and then let's see, whatever comes, comes."

What does 58 years of hurt mean to you?

Nobody needs to remind England fans how long it has been since they won the World Cup, but what does 58 years of hurt mean to Thomas Tuchel?

That's the question that has just been put to the German, who has already declared that he wants to add a second star to the England shirt.

A star is gained if you win the World Cup.

Tuchel says he has "found a vision to share" with the FA.

"It's a project, an adventure that I'm happy to be a part of," he adds.

"I know there are some trophies missing in the federation and of course I want to help make it happen."

'We have the ingredients to win'

Sky News' sports correspondent Rob Harris is next to pose Thomas Tuchel a question - asking whether the German is ready for the notorious pressure that the England job brings.

"I'm up for the task. I'm up for these 18 months to work with this group and be part of this amazing federation," Tuchel responds.

Harris next asks what the coach believes the England team needs to get over the line and finally win a trophy.

"They are there," he says.

"The consistency of [getting to] quarter-finals, semi-finals, finals is impressive and it shows that we have players who compete in the strongest league in the world day in, day out.

"We have the ingredients," he adds.

He says you always need a bit of luck as a manger, particularly with injuries.

"But we feel confident to add something from our experience in club football that can maybe help."
