Donald Trump has said a time and place for his historic summit with Kim Jong Un will be announced "within three days".

Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, the US President also ruled out meeting Mr Kim at the demilitarised zone which separates North and South Korea.

It comes after he suggested that the demilitarised zone would be the ideal location to meet with Mr Kim last month.

'Time and place set for North Korea meeting'

South Korean leader Moon Jae-in met with his North Korean counterpart at the Peace House building, in the demilitarised village of Panmunjom, at the end of April.

Mr Trump had said a summit at Peace House would have a symbolic value but did say the two parties were considering other options, including Singapore.

He told reporters at the White House: "People never thought you were going to have a situation where were having serious and positive communications with North Korea. And we are.

Kim Jong Un 'committed to denuclearisation'

The comments come as three Americans who were jailed in North Korea head back to the US after being freed.

Mr Trump said he would be greeting the men when they arrive and said: "I appreciate Kim Jong Un doing this and allowing them to go.

"It will be quite a scene, it represents something very important to this country - people never thought a thing like this could happen."

Speaking about the upcoming summit, Mr Trump said he hoped the meeting would be a success.

"We have picked a time and place for the summit, I think it's going to be successful but who knows," he said. "This is something nobody thought was going to happen, I really believe it's going to be a good thing."

The anticipation ahead of the meeting follows Mr Trump's announcement in March, when he confirmed a meeting was being planned despite the two leaders trading insults for months and economic sanctions on North Korea being ramped up in response to its nuclear weapons programme.

Dotards and Rocket Men: Trump and Kim's insults

Mr Trump had previously threatened "fire and fury" in response to threats from North Korea. Mr Trump also referred to the North Korean leader as "Little Rocket Man".

Following Kim Jong Un's historic meeting last month with the South Korean leader, at which they agreed on complete denuclearisation, Mr Trump warned that the US would "not be played" when it came to talks with North Korea.

However, he expressed his delight at the news, tweeting: "KOREAN WAR TO END! The United States, and all of its GREAT people, should be very proud of what is now taking place in Korea!"
