Trump still acting like the businessman I knew in New York

Roger Gimbel
Why you can trust Sky News

Thirteen years ago, Donald Trump chartered a boat belonging to businessman Roger Gimbel for his reality TV show, The Apprentice. Here, Mr Gimbel tells Sky News that the business-like qualities that Mr Trump displayed back then are exactly what he is showcasing now in the White House.

I have a 65ft luxury fishing yacht called Hattrick, which I keep up at a club in Montauk, the fishing capital of the east in the US.

Back in 2005, this yacht was chartered by Trump for the winning Apprentice team in one episode. They had given them a weekend at the club in Mantauk with a private fishing excursion.

He saw them off on their trip and they had a private jet to fly from New York City.

The guys who worked for the show called us and the interesting part of the negotiation was that Trump had said he didn't want to pay for the charter, since he said we will get all the publicity from being on the show.

That was typical Donald Trump.

More on Donald Trump

We went along with it.

That is the way he is now too.

A few years later I was at a charity event with him and his daughter in Mantauk, and I spoke with Ivanka. I liked her.

They are very professional.

He doesn't smoke, or drink, he is very straight, and what we call "buttoned down".

I think that puts him on the conservative side and I think that is why he was embraced by the Republican Party.

(They are) very business oriented as a family and they are extremely close and extremely successful. All of them are very smart and very successful.

The guy has done a wonderful job with his family, which is admirable to watch.

It is very similar to what we saw with the Kennedys. The family was very smart, and they were all very successful, there is a similarity there with the Kennedy family.

I do not see him as a Republican, or a Democrat, he is a Trumpian.

A lot of my friends see that he sits on that side but his views are across multiple areas - he is not really a core Republican. He is the kind of guy that will do what he wants and does not care about party lines.

The thing that is harming him is his tweeting.

When he fights with people, it does not look good, it is unnecessary, I think it hurts him. That's my opinion as a New Yorker.

He was always the way he is - he would get to meetings and he was the rough and tough business guy. He did whatever he thought was right and that has not changed.

The tweeting has not changed, but as a president, that is not helpful in my view.

He has done a lot for the economy by trying to relate and make it look like a business. At the World Economic Forum, he was pushing companies to do business with us.

There has not been a president that has touted for business with the US for as long as I can remember. I think that is a good thing for us and for the rest of the world.

I still feel positive about him.

Time will tell. It is pretty early in the process but he seems to have handled a lot of the crises that have come up.

There is a positive effect on my business and most of the people that own companies are looking positively at 2018. The stock market is as high as it's ever been, there is a continuance of that which will help investment in entrepreneurs going forward.

I think one thing that is interesting is the media has gone after him like they have never gone after anyone else. I think more and more is going to come out, that there were attempts to derail him, like certain government agencies, I think more of that will come out.

He is exactly the way he was when we did business with him in 2005. He has not taken the presidency and changed who he is. Where he is nasty and a bully, he is still like that.

The only reason he has sat back and not done certain things is his advisers have threatened to walk out on him.

He does not care, he has enough money that he does not care what most people think.

But I do think he has America's best interests at heart. He has been an honourable guy, he has not always been the nicest guy because he is a deal maker. There were a lot of people who did business with him who were not happy with him, but he definitely wants to have a positive effect on the country.

He did not need the money, he did not do this to boost his business, he has more money than he can spend.

Seven to 10 years ago, he did an interview where he said "I would like to be President". I think for many years he wanted to consider it but I do not know if he thought it was realistic.

I believe he has been interested for a long time in being president. He definitely had a plan. He spent his own money and he definitely wanted it.

He didn't just fall into it - he is not the kind of guy who just falls into it.
