All air traffic in France was disrupted by a computer glitch - delaying flights in multiple countries.
Neighbouring nations including Britain were most badly affected as air traffic controllers struggled to re-direct flights through Europe's crowded air space.
British Airways said it expected disruption to "some of our flights to France and Spain, as well as services flying over those countries".
It offered free ticket exchanges to anyone travelling to France, Spain, Italy or Portugal.
All air traffic in France was temporarily halted - including planes going in and out of one of Europe's busiest airports, Charles de Gaulle in Paris.
Hundreds of flights were delayed, and schedules were still lagging behind hours after the problem had been fixed.
The cause of the problem is being investigated, French civil aviation authority DGAC said.
A spokesman said there was "no impact on flight security" and the problem had been fixed before midday.
