Temperatures are set to plummet tonight and into tomorrow morning, with the Met Office warning they will fall well below freezing for most of the UK.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin says the South West - where it's expected to be slightly milder - will experience some rain early tomorrow morning, which could turn into sleet and snow over the tops of the moors.

But for the vast majority of us, it'll be a dry, clear and cold start to Saturday.

Rain will spread into Wales and Northern Ireland through the day, turning to snow at points, before creeping into the midlands in the afternoon.

Northern Powergrid says power has been restored to the tens of thousands of its customers who experienced power cuts due to the snowy conditions.

We reported at 3pm that thousands of people were still without power due to snow and ice across west and south Yorkshire.

They were among 33,000 who had experienced power cuts since 8pm last night.

In an update this evening, Northern Powergrid says the last customers were restored at 6pm after a "challenging day".

Network Rail Scotland (NRS) is warning passengers about the potential for more snow across the country over the weekend.

A yellow Met Office warning for snow and ice will cover large parts of Scotland from 3pm tomorrow and 6am on Sunday.

NRS says it is expecting "a more significant snowfall" late on Saturday afternoon, which will likely "bring persistent snow" into Sunday.

The West Highland Line and Highland Mainline are expected to see the greatest depths of snow, it said, adding that it won't stick around for long.

Heavy rainfall combined with a "rapid thaw" of snow on Sunday could lead to flooding and speed restrictions on the NRS network.

It isn't expecting to make changes to its timetable as of yet though.
