Polar Patroller and Licence To Chill: The punniest snow gritter names

Gritney Spears, I'm Shovelin and Hansel and Grit-all are just a few of the names given to snow gritters that maintain Scotland's trunk road network.

The road connects Scotland's major cities, towns, airports and ports.

Tonight, 27 gritters will take to roads in the southwestern part of the network, pre-empting the effects of icy conditions, Amey, the company that maintains roads in the region, said.

If you're very bored, an interactive map by allows users to track the gritters from across the country.

Amey has also appealed for people to submit new family friendly, pun-related names for their new fleet of vehicles in 2024.

Here are some of the best examples for inspiration:

  • I Want To Break Freeze
  • Taylor Drift
  • Grittin' On Wae It
  • Gritly Come Dancing

More than 500 homes without power in North East

A power cut in North East England is affecting 541 customers, according to Northern Powergrid.

Most of the homes affected are in Leeds, with others experiencing outages in Newcastle upon Tyne, York, Middlesbrough and Hull.

It comes after 800 customers in the North West remain without power after heavy snow damaged miles of overhead lines.

Northern Powergrid did not go into detail about what has caused the power cuts, but a yellow weather warning for rain is currently in place across the region.

The company said it aims to have power restored to those affected by 3pm.
