The European Union is poised to grant a third delay to Britain's exit from the bloc - as Boris Johnson announced he will push for an election on 12 December.
So what happens now?
:: Today
- The prime minister announced he will call for MPs to vote on Monday for a 12 December general election.
- Minutes after Mr Johnson announced his fresh election push, MPs voted by 310 votes to 294 - a majority of 16 - to approve the Queen's Speech, which sets out the government's legislative agenda.
- In Brussels, EU leaders are set to accept Britain's request for a delay to Brexit until the end of January.
- Sky's Europe Correspondent Adam Parsons has been told by diplomatic sources the approval could come in writing, rather than requiring a meeting of the bloc's leaders - so it could be announced at any time.
:: 28 October
- The prime minister will ask the Commons to vote on a motion for a 12 December general election.
- Under the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011, two-thirds of MPs must vote for the motion for an election to be held earlier than the end of a prime minister's five-year term.
:: 31 October
- As it stands, this is the day Britain is due to leave the EU - with Mr Johnson coming to office pledging to deliver Brexit on this date - "do or die".
- However, this looks like a remote prospect after MPs rejected his timetable for passing the Withdrawal Agreement Bill, the legislation needed to enshrine his Brexit deal into UK law.
- This defeat is what prompted Mr Johnson to call for an election.
:: 6 November
- If two-thirds of MPs vote on Monday for a general election, the PM has said parliament will be dissolved on 6 November.
- Parliament is dissolved 25 working days before a general election, allowing for candidates to campaign ahead of the election.
- The Chancellor, Sajid Javid, is meant to be delivering the Budget on 6 November, but Sky sources said this was cancelled hours after Mr Johnson announced he wants a 12 December election
:: 12 December
- If the election is given the thumbs up by parliament, voters across the UK will be going to the polls on 12 December.
:: 13 December
- The UK will find out who was won the election.
:: 31 January
- This is when the EU is likely to extend the Brexit deadline until, although this is not guaranteed.
- Three months is what Mr Johnson requested, in order to comply with the so-called Benn Act, passed by MPs to avoid a no-deal exit on 31 October.
- A senior EU source has said that European Council President Donald Tusk will recommend that EU member states accept an extension until the end of January, which can be terminated when or if a Brexit deal is ratified
