The law on joint enterprise - which can result in people being convicted for murder even if they did not commit the killing - has been wrongly interpreted by criminal trial judges over the past 30 years, according to the Supreme Court.
We take a look at the high-profile cases where the controversial law has been used.
:: Stephen Lawrence murder
David Norris and Gary Dobson were found guilty of the 1993 murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence in 2012.
The 18-year-old was stabbed to death by a gang in a racially motivated murder in southeast London.
:: Garry Newlove murder
Three teenagers - Adam Swellings, Stephen Sorton and Jordan Cunliffe - were jailed for life in January 2008 for the murder.
Mr Newlove was attacked after he confronted a group outside his house in Cheshire in August 2007.
Cunliffe's mother Janet claims although her son, who is partially blind, was at the scene he did not take part in the murder.
:: PC Neil Doyle murder
Football agent Andrew Taylor and sports event manager Timmy Donovan were聽jailed for beating to death off-duty policeman PC Neil Doyle.
He was on a Christmas night out with colleagues in Liverpool in 2014.
Neither defendant admitted throwing the fatal punch.
:: Shakilus Townsend murder
Samantha Joseph, who acted as a "honey trap" to lure 16-year-old Shakilus Townsend to his death, was jailed for 10 years for the killing when she was 15 in 2008.
She led Shakilus into a quiet alley in south London where he was beaten with baseball bats and stabbed six times by her older boyfriend Danny McLean.
They were both convicted of murder.
:: Zac Olumegbon murder
Five teenagers were given jail sentences totalling 76 years in 2011 over the killing of Zac Olumegbon.
The 15-year-old was stabbed to death as he arrived at school in south London in July 2010.
The gang were armed with at least two bayonet-type knives and had deliberately been driven to the spot to attack the teenager.
