Three days in Boston with a star-studded ceremony at the end. What could possibly go wrong?
As it turns out, quite a lot.
This was supposed to be the trip that showcased the royal family on a global stage.
William and Kate's first overseas trip as Prince and Princess of Wales.
The trouble was, before they'd even landed in Boston, attention turned to the royal racism row at Buckingham Palace.
Prince William had to be told about his godmother's comments, mid-flight.
The couple hadn't set foot on US soil, but their trip began with a statement from their spokesperson saying there was "no place for racism in our society".
The story dominated headlines, but there was worse to follow.
Day two, saw Harry and Meghan release the trailer for their documentary series.
A carefully timed piece of PR and a deliberate act of ambush.
Had William and Kate seen the trailer? "They're getting ready for their engagements" came the quick reply, "And that's their focus."
In fairness, the couple carried on, championing and visiting the kinds of projects they care about.
If they were irked it didn't show. The problem is, once again, their engagements were eclipsed by other events.
At the end of a difficult few days Prince William certainly enjoyed the warm welcome given by President Biden.
As global greetings go, they don't come much bigger than this.
William was shown around the John F Kennedy Library by the late president's daughter.
JFK once said, "Life is never easy. There is work to be done and obligations to be met," words William understands more than most.

With so much overshadowing their trip, the Earthshot ceremony was the couple's moment to shine.
Kate rented the dress but owned the green carpet.
It was at least, a positive end to a challenging few days.
