Wimbledon school crash - latest: Child dies and multiple injured in 'major incident'; woman in her 40s arrested

A Land Rover crashed into a girls' prep school in Wimbledon this morning, killing one eight-year-old girl. In total 10 people were taken to hospital and 16 were treated at the scene.

Local MP: 'This will cause shock across the whole of the local community'

Stephen Hammond, the local MP for Wimbledon, has confirmed the school was having its last day of term.

Speaking at the scene, Mr Hammond said: "It was very clear, very quickly, that it was a major incident and the local police declared it just that.

"I think you will have seen by the sheer scale of the response from the paramedics, air ambulance, fire brigade and the police what an important and serious incident this is.

"And what a sad incident - it is tragically on the last day of term, for this young girl to have lost her life.

"This is a well-liked, well-respected, well-known school.

"Most of the children who go here will be Wimbledon families, and this will cause shock across the whole of the local community."

School is 'devastated' by 'dreadful event'

Th Study Prep School has published a statement after it was confirmed that a girl had died after a Land Rover drove into the school this morning.

"We are profoundly shocked by the tragic accident this morning at Wilberforce House and devastated that it has claimed the life of one of our young pupils as well as injuring several others," the statement said.

"Our thoughts are with the bereaved family and with the families of those injured at this terrible time.

"It is still far too soon to fully understand what happened, but we are well aware of the significant impact this dreadful event will have on our pupils and their families. 

"Their welfare remains our top priority and we will be doing everything we can to support them, especially those who suffered injuries.

"Now that a police investigation is under way we will not be making any further public statement for the time being and would ask that the privacy of our school community is respected at this deeply upsetting time."

'Absolutely shell-shocked' - parents carry limping girl away from Wimbledon school crash scene

The parents of a girl seen limping after a Land Rover crashed into a school in Wimbledon looked "absolutely shell-shocked".

She was seen by the Sky News team on the scene being carried away with a cut to her leg.

Emergency services have since confirmed an eight-year-old girl has died in the incident, and that 16 people were treated at the scene, and 10 patients were taken to hospital.

At least seven of those injured are children, police said earlier.

Our correspondent Jacquie Beltrao was at the scene and said the child she saw "couldn't speak at all".

Ex-pupil's parent says school is 'a really nice, small friendly place'

The parent of a former pupil at The Study Prep School said the fatal crash this morning made him "very emotional".

His daughter left the school in Wimbledon, south London, two years ago, and said it is "a really nice, small friendly place".

He said: "It's unbelievable. I heard about it this morning, it's terribly sad. I just feel very emotional.

"It's a good school. It's not really an academic boiler house, it's a really nice, balanced school.

"It upsets me.

"The building that was crashed into is a new building, I think it's only been there for about a year."

PM thanks emergency services for their response

The prime minister has thanked the emergency services for their swift response in the incident, his official spokesperson has said.

"The prime minister's deepest condolences are with the family of the girl who has tragically lost her life," they said.

"His thoughts are with all those injured and involved in the horrific collision in Wimbledon this morning.

"This will have been a terrifying experience for all of the children, staff and parents."

Where is the school where fatal crash took place?

We heard earlier from the chairman of The Study Prep School's board of governors, who said the community had been "profoundly affected" by the tragedy.

We now know that an eight-year-old girl was killed and 10 people were taken to hospital after a Land Rover crashed into the building this morning.

The school lies in a "tucked away" part of Wimbledon, a short distance from the club where the tennis tournament is taking place.

'Heartbreaking' to learn of girl's death - security minister

Security Minister Tom Tugendhat said the death of an eight-year-old girl at Wimbledon's The Study Prep School is "heartbreaking".

He tweeted in the last few minutes to say his thoughts are with the school's pupils and their loved ones.

Police looking to identify witnesses and CCTV

Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland said officers will be looking to identify witnesses and view CCTV in the coming hours and days.

She confirmed the crash is not being treated as a terrorist incident, but wouldn't comment further on the investigation.

"There's a person in custody that will have to be interviewed and from that stage onwards we'll have to review the evidence and make a decision about what actually happened," she said.

School 'profoundly affected by tragedy,' says governor

John Tucker, chairman of the board of governors at The Study Prep school, said the school has been "profoundly affected by this tragedy" and is "not in a position" to comment further.

He tells reporters that the board will be in communication with the local community.

Further steps by the school will be detailed later, he added.

Mr Tucker stood beside the school's headmistress Helen Lowe, who held hands with headmistress-elect Sharon Maher.
