A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after an 18-month-old boy fell from a sixth-floor window.
Officers were called to Newcastle House in Barkerend Road in Bradford, West Yorkshire, just after 5pm on Saturday following a report that a child had suffered life-threatening injuries.
Police said after arriving at the Y-shaped block of flats, it soon became apparent that the baby had died.
The 23-year-old woman who was arrested is receiving a medical assessment in custody.
Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen, who is leading the investigation, said: "This is clearly an extremely traumatic incident and specially trained officers are working to support the child's family members and those who witnessed what took place.
"It is no exaggeration to say those who witnessed this incident will have been deeply traumatised by what they saw."
A resident of the flats told the Press Association that there had previously been an age restriction in the block, with no one under 35 allowed to live there.
He said the rule had disappeared when the flats changed from the council to a housing trust.
He said he had kept his living room windows closed as it was "blowing a gale and there was a lot of rain", adding that they only open four inches.
Police said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident but have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
