Japan to release treated radioactive waste water from Fukushima plant despite concerns

Japan will start releasing more than 1 million metric tonnes of treated radioactive water from the nuclear power plant in Fukushima on Thursday, despite opposition from its neighbours. The decision comes weeks after the UN's nuclear watchdog approved the plan.

The plant was hit by a huge earthquake in 2011 that destroyed its cooling systems and caused three reactors to melt, contaminating the water and triggering continuous leaks.
