Merseyside Police have thanked members of the public who welcomed the Liverpool Football Club on its victory parade through the city.

Assistant Chief Constable Chris Green said "only a small number of incidents" had been reported over the last couple of days.

He said: 鈥淚 would like to take this opportunity to thank the thousands of people who lined the streets of Liverpool today to welcome home the Liverpool team.

鈥淭his was a wonderful opportunity to show the world what a great place Liverpool is and how passionate the people of Liverpool are about their football teams and their city.

鈥淭he atmosphere was fantastic and it was great to see so many people, young and old, lining the nine miles of the parade route.

鈥淥ver the past two days Liverpool has hosted tens of thousands of people, both to watch last night鈥檚 game and today鈥檚 parade, and I am pleased that only a small number of incidents have been reported during that time.

"The overall feedback we have received has been very positive."

The breakdown of security at last night's Champions League final was "absolutely unacceptable" and the facts need to be established, Liverpool's CEO Billy Hogan has said.

In a statement, Mr Hogan said the team had discussed with UEFA the need for a "full and transparent" investigation after fans were left being tear-gassed by officers.

He said: "The stadium entry and the breakdown of security in the perimeter was absolutely unacceptable and frankly the treatment of our fans as well."

Mr Hogan went on to say that it was "imperative" that "we understand what happened last night and how we got into that situation where people's safety was put at risk."

Crowds of fans have lined the streets of Liverpool to welcome Jurgen Klopp's team return home for a victory parade.

The Premier League runners-up, who were denied adding the Champions League to their FA and League Cup triumphs last night, were seen on top of their bus as they made their way through the city this afternoon.

The parade also includes the Liverpool FC Women's side who won the Women's Championship trophy in April.

Footage has emerged of tear gas being thrown at Liverpool supporters at a fan park in Paris after the club's Champions League defeat last night.

Supporters can be seen wiping their eyes and coughing as they try to make their way through the fan zone.

The man who filmed the footage said the use of tear gas caused "confusion" and "chaos" among supporters.

The chief football writer for the Mail On Sunday, Rob Draper, has said authorities in France "panicked" ahead of the match between Liverpool and Real Madrid yesterday and caused a "bigger problem" by closing the gates at the football ground.

Draper went on say there should have been a protocol in place to delay the match and "calm things outside" as the chaotic scenes began to unfold.

He wrote: "Seems clear authorities panicked, closed all Liverpool Football Club gates and caused an even bigger problem. If this happens again, there should be a protocol. 

"If police have to close gates, then the game is immediately delayed by an hour to calm things outside and allow a new plan."

The football writer went on to say that fans were "directed down a tiny walkway" outside the stadium and described how there was just "one tiny entrance" which was "clearly inadequate".

He added: "How had this not been planned for? How can you shut gates and not have a safe plan?"
