In pictures: Damage in Tehran after Israeli strikes

These pictures show some of the damage in the Iranian capital, where state TV has claimed dozens have been killed (see our 9.19am post).

Israel has said it has "paved the way" to fly over Tehran, adding it had several jets flying over last night.

IDF: More than 20 Iranian commanders killed

More than 20 Iranian commanders have been killed in Israeli strikes on Iran, the IDF has said in its latest update.

The military claimed that Israeli fighter jets killed both the head of the Intelligence Directorate in the Iranian Armed Forces General Staff and the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps鈥檚 (IRGC) surface-to-surface missile array.

It added: "Since the beginning of the operation, over 20 commanders in the Iranian regime鈥檚 security apparatus have been eliminated."

According to the IDF, the head of the Intelligence Directorate in the Iranian Armed Forces General Staff, Gholam-Reza Marhabi, was responsible for intelligence situational assessments for the Iranian Armed Forces and was considered Iran's most senior intelligence officer.

The statement added: "Marhabi played a key role in intelligence evaluations, operational planning, and combat preparations against Israel in the past year and before."

The commander of the IRGC's surface-to-surface missile array, General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, oversaw most of Iran鈥檚 long-range surface-to-surface and cruise missile capabilities, according to the IDF.

"These capabilities serve as the regime's primary offensive tools against the State of Israel.

"Bagheri managed Iran鈥檚 firepower systems and played an active role in the decision-making processes behind Iran鈥檚 attacks on Israel in April and October 2024."

Iran-US nuclear talks 'unjustifiable' while Israeli attacks continue

Iran's foreign minister has described talks with the US as unjustifiable.

Tehran has been in talks with Washington over a deal to curb their nuclear programme, with the next meeting scheduled tomorrow.

But Abbas Araqchi has placed further doubt on those discussions, citing "barbarous" Israeli attacks.

Earlier, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry said dialogue with the US is "meaningless" in the face of Israeli strikes.

The US has said it still hopes discussions will continue.

Israel 'trying to make world safer' in fight with 'foul place' Iran, says spokesman

With Israeli citizens told to take shelter amid attacks on Iran yesterday, foreign ministry spokesman Oren Marmorstein was asked how they're explaining this to families.

"I'll share with you how I explained it to my nine-year-old daughter when we rushed her into the shelter," he told our presenter Samantha Washington.

"I told her that in a very foul place called Iran, there's a very extreme regime, the Mullah regime, and they are doing everything possible to get their hands on the most dangerous weapon humankind [has] ever known - a nuclear weapon," he said.

"And that's why we are undergoing these difficulties. But it's in order for us to be safe. And actually, it's not only for us, Israel, to be safe.

"The idea is to make the world a safer place, because those missiles, those ballistic missiles can get all the way to Europe, to the UK."

Iran 'considering' closure of vital shipping route

The Strait of Hormuz, which is the world's most important route for oil shipping, could be blocked by Iran.

That's according to news outlet IRINN, which cited statements from a member of Iran's security commission.

They report Tehran is considering the closure of the strait, which lies between Oman and Iran.

Our economics correspondent Gurpreet Narwan reports blocking the route could push the price of oil to more than 拢74 per barrel.

It's currently at 拢55.

Narwan breaks the issue down in the video below...

At least 23 killed in Gaza - mostly near aid sites, medics say

At least 23 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to medics, most of them near an aid distribution site.

Staff at al Awda and al Aqsa hospitals in central Gaza said at least 15 people were killed as they tried to approach the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid centre near the Netzarim corridor.

They said the rest were killed in separate attacks across the territory.

There has been no immediate comment from Israel or the GHF.

The group started sharing food packages at the end of May.

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said at least 274 people have so far been killed, and more than 2,000 wounded, near aid sites since then.

Separately, Israel ordered residents in Khan Younis and nearby towns to head west, towards a so-called humanitarian zone, warning it will forcefully work against "terror organisations" in the area.

Lebanon aims to keep airspace open

Along with Syria and Jordan, Lebanon reopened its airspace earlier today.

The Lebanese had said it will shut again tonight until early tomorrow morning, but its transport minister now says they hope to keep it clear throughout the night.

"The airport will remain open unless something emerges beyond our control," Fayez Rasamny said while touring Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport.

Soldiers wounded during Iranian attacks, says Israel

Israel has given its first report of wounded soldiers since Iran retaliated last night.

The military said seven were lightly wounded in central Israel, though they wouldn't say exactly where.

They were taken to hospital briefly, they added, before being sent home.

No further details were given.

Smoke seen rising from Iranian military base

News agencies in Iran are reporting an explosion at a military base in western Iran.

It appears to be the Imam Hassan base in Kermanshah.

A video shared online appears to show smoke rising from the base.

David Lammy speaks to Iran's foreign minister to 'urge calm'

The UK's foreign secretary said he is "alarmed" by further strikes overnight, highlighting reports of casualties in Israel.

"We must urgently de-escalate and prevent any further harm to civilians," he posted on social media.

"Following the prime minister's call with Netanyahu, I spoke to Iranian FM Araghchi to urge calm."

Lammy is expected to spend the day in talks with counterparts across the Middle East.
