Mourning the Queen: 'Why I came to Buckingham Palace'

Why you can trust Sky News

People at Buckingham Palace share their thoughts with the Sky News Daily podcast on what the Queen meant to them.

"The greatest lady ever."

"We always thought of her as the boss."

"Such a stabilising force."

Words from those among the thousands who queued through heavy downpours down the Mall to reach Buckingham Palace.

Some prayed, some laid bouquets, others wanted a selfie or a quiet moment, so they could say they'd been part of the crowd paying their respects to Queen Elizabeth II.

Speaking to Niall Paterson hosting the Sky New Daily podcast, Anne Grantham, who was 11 years old when she watched the Queen's coronation, said she remembers singing the anthem when it was last God Save The King.

"She's never really put a foot wrong. That form of duty doesn't really happen anymore," she said.

"Charles will be such a great King. He's not really appreciated. He will come into his own."

For Rohan, who's originally from Jamaica and lived in London for two years, the connection feels different.

He said: "She was a mother to everyone and I have love and respect for her. I'll remember all the great things she's done for everyone."

Jordan came with flowers because his mum had used the family WhatsApp group to ask him to pay his respects.

He said: "My family were all in the army. My Dad was in the Queen's Lancashire Regiment.

"We were always to respect the Queen and the Royal Family. She was just always there, constantly in our lives, represented the best about the British.

"It's a really sad day."
