A sinkhole has opened up on the White House lawn, prompting a flood of social media jokes.

Grounds staff have placed a board over the hole, which is close to the entrance to the building's briefing room, and marked it with cones.

But several columnists used the geological phenomenon to mock Donald Trump's threat to drain the swamp in Washington DC.

Others picked up on recent rumours that Mr Trump has not been paying enough attention to his wife Melania by saying she dug the hole to escape.

The sinkhole is thought to have formed after the US capital experienced several days of heavy rain in the past week.

Much of the city's National Mall - home to iconic monuments including the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument - was marsh before it was drained and filled in.

Around this time last year, similar jokes were made when a sinkhole opened up in the pavement outside Mr Trump's Florida resort Mar-a-lago.

Tris Resists wrote on Twitter: "Between Maralagos sinkhole and the one that opened and is getting deeper on the White House lawn; do you think it's a sign? Is it trumps very own gateway to hell?"

Star Trek's George Takei tweeted: "So a sinkhole has opened up on the White House lawn. God was asked whether He would stop it from swallowing the whole building, but He responded, 'The Trumps are in my thoughts and prayers.'"
