New Year's Eve events cancelled due to storm warning

New Year's Eve events in the southwest have been cancelled due to the Met Office's yellow weather warning for severe gales.

Plymouth's Winter Wonderland in Central Park cancelled its New Year's Eve event, which was set to run from 6pm until midnight, due to high winds.

In a post on Facebook, Plymouth's Winter Wonderland said: "Unfortunately we have taken the very difficult decision to cancel our New Year鈥檚 Eve event due to the high winds expected."

Similarly, the town of Barnstaple in Devon cancelled its New Year's Eve fireworks display due to "gusting winds".

"Unfortunately due to the weather conditions and the gusting winds we will be unable to do the fireworks this evening due to safety," Barnstaple Town Centre Management said.

"We know this is disappointing, but safety is always the priority and we unfortunately can鈥檛 control the weather. Wishing everyone a very happy new year - please enjoy safely."

The Met Office warning runs from 10am today up until midnight.

Further wet weather likely after new year, Met Office says

Further wet and windy spells are likely as people head back to work after the festive break, the Met Office has said.

After a bright start on New Year's Day a band of rain will move in from the southwest, it said, with Tuesday seeing another area of low pressure bringing very similar weather.

From the mid week onwards the low pressure will become slow-moving across the UK, bringing a mix of bright spells and showers.

Fancy a festive dip?

The Met Office has issued a map showing how chilly sea surface temperatures are around the UK coast for those considering ringing in the New Year with a festive dip.

It shared a "weather hack" from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) recommending those taking the plunge fill a flask with their favourite brew and have a warm drink on hand to help warm up after being in the water.

Here's the map showing sea surface temperatures around the UK:

Adverse weather causes ferry delays

Adverse weather has caused ferry delays between Dover and France, DFDS has said.

The Port of Dover said sea conditions are "rough with a south-westerly Force 7 to severe gale Force 9. Visibility is good."

It warned Eurostar passengers who may have had their journeys disrupted as a result of flooding yesterday that "foot passenger availability is strictly limited today due to increased demand".

The port added: "Please do not turn up to the port without a booking and contact ferry operators for further updates."

Similarly, Southeastern Railway said: "We鈥檙e aware that foot passenger capacity from Dover is extremely limited so please only head for the port if you鈥檝e got a confirmed reservation."

Landslip closes rail line in Scotland

A landslip has closed a railway line between Crianlarich and Fort William in Scotland.

A picture of the scene showed where the ground had given way near the track.

Heavy and thundery showers predicted this afternoon

The Met Office has predicted heavy and possibly thundery showers in some places this afternoon.

It said there would be a mix of bright spells and scattered showers for many, with strong winds across the south.

Mainland Scotland will see the driest and brightest weather.

Hundreds of trains cancelled due to staff shortages

Travel misery abounds as hundreds of trains have been cancelled due to staff shortages.

Northern Trains has issued a do not travel notice for today on links from Manchester Victoria to Stalybridge, Morecambe and Heysham to Lancaster, Oxenholme to Windermere, Preston to Colne and Clitheroe to Bolton.

There is also major disruption to Thameslink services due to staff shortages.

Severe weather is expected to impact some Transport for Wales services until the end of New Year's Day.

The Met Office has warned there could be further disruption caused by wind and rain sweeping across the UK.

Family celebrate New Year's Eve 'miracle' as they get unexpected tickets home

A French family who were worried they would not be able to return home until 2 January after their Eurostar train was cancelled yesterday due to flooding have celebrated their unexpected tickets home today as a New Year's Eve "miracle".

Isobel Ram, 49, her partner Amaury Ferrero, 52, and daughter Lee Ram, 20, live in Toulouse.

After their train home was cancelled yesterday they booked the first available return tickets for 2 January.

Ms Ram told the PA news agency: "We spent the night in a hotel, we came back this morning and a miracle happened and they gave us three tickets for today's Eurostar (12.30pm train). We were worried we would be here until 2 January.

"We were super happy but a bit embarrassed because there was a huge queue of people waiting behind us and we didn't want to show we got tickets, make it too obvious, in case other people didn't.

"But we said a huge thank you to the lady who did the tickets for us."

She said her daughter was especially pleased they will be home for New Year's Eve, adding: "She has got a huge party in Paris tonight. It's excellent, fantastic, brilliant, a miracle."

Southeastern services running again following flooding

Southeastern Railway has said its highspeed service is running to and from St Pancras International following disruption due to flooding yesterday.

Managing director Steve White said: "Excellent news. Our full high-speed service will be reinstated on HS1 shortly. Both tunnels are now open at line speed (160kmh)."

A spokesperson for HS1,  which runs the route between London and the Channel Tunnel, said the line had re-opened and Eurostar trains had left St Pancras bound for Paris this morning.

They said: "Speed restrictions which had been in place on a short stretch of track were subsequently lifted at 11am, with normal speeds now resumed for all services.

"Both tunnels affected by unprecedented volumes of water yesterday were cleared of flooding overnight allowing engineers to inspect the line to ensure the safe running of trains through the affected area.

"Passengers are advised to check with their operator, Eurostar or Southeastern, directly before travelling.

"We understand how frustrating this has been for passengers and apologise for the inconvenience caused at such an important time of the year."
