Israeli president says country is fighting to 'eliminate threat'

Iran is fighting to spread "hatred, chaos, terror, fanaticism", Israel's president has said.

Israel, he said, is fighting to "eliminate a threat".

"The world must stand with Israel for the sake of humanity," he said in a post on social media.

He also said: "Last night, Iran again unleashed a wave of missiles on Israel - with one goal: to kill.

"Children asleep in their beds. Grandparents. Holocaust survivors. A beautiful Muslim family in Tamra. Jews and Muslims. Israelis and Palestinians.

"Evil. Pure and deliberate. We mourn brothers and sisters torn from us."

What we know about casualties in Iran

Iran hasn't provided an overall number of deaths in the country.

On Friday - the day Israel began to attack Iran - Tehran's UN envoy said 78 people had been killed.

He also said more than 320 people were wounded.

Yesterday, Iran said 60 people were killed after a missile brought down a 14-storey block of flats in the capital, including 29 children.

Separately, the governor of Iran's East Azerbaijan province in the north said 30 troops and one rescuer have been killed, with 55 wounded.

It's not clear if those figures are part of the earlier figure or a separate total.

It's also not clear if there have been more casualties from attacks overnight.

UK 'not involved' in Israel - but won't 'rule anything out'

We reported yesterday the UK is sending jets to the Middle East.

Speaking on Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips, the UK chancellor - minister in charge of the nation's finances - repeated the country has not been involved with any strikes.

But asked if the UK could get involved in future, Rachel Reeves said she is "not going to rule anything out at this stage".

Asked if she wants to see a leadership change in Tehran, she said she has "no time for the Iranian regime", before repeating her priority is de-esclation.

The UK is not trying to "ramp up the rhetoric", she added.

At least 12 Palestinians killed by Israel in Gaza, medics say

In Gaza, which Israel has bombarded since the October 7 attacks in 2023, 12 Palestinians have been killed today.

That's according to medics al Awda Hospital in the Hamas-run territory, who said three were killed and dozens wounded in Israeli fire as they approached a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid site.

Two others were killed en route to another aid site in Rafah, in the south, they said.

An airstrike killed seven in Beit Lahiya, in the north, they added.

Israel has not commented.

The GHF began sharing food packages in Gaza at the end of May, after Israel partially lifted a near three-month total blockade.

Palestinians have been killed in near-daily mass shootings while trying to reach the food.

The UN has rejected the new distribution system as inadequate, dangerous and a violation of humanitarian impartiality principles.

Iran says strikes on Israel are self-defence - and blames US

Iran's foreign minister has been speaking in the past few minutes

Abbas Araghchi said Tehran's response to Israel's attacks are based on self-defence.

Israel's strikes, which came first, would not have happened without the greenlight from the US, he added.

Washington, he said, should condemn Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, adding talks with the US could have led to an agreement.

But Israel wanted to sabotage those negotiations, he said, which the US wanted to curb Iran's nuclear programme.

He also said Iran doesn't want to expand the war, unless forced to do so.

Israel warns Iranian civilians near weapon facilities to evacuate

Israel's military spokesman has issued an evacuation warning to all Iranian residents near weapon facilities.

Avichay Adraee posted an "urgent warning to all Iranian citizens" on social media.

"All individuals currently or in the near future present in or around military weapons production facilities and their support institutions are to leave these areas immediately and not return until further notice," he wrote.

Germany offers Iran nuclear talks along with UK and France

Germany's foreign minister has said they are ready to hold immediate nuclear talks with Iran, along with France and the UK.

The US hopes to curb Iran's nuclear programme, but a new round of talks were called off today, following Israel's attacks on Iran.

Johann Wadephul, who is on a visit to the Middle East, said he wants to de-escalate the conflict.

"Germany, together with France and Britain are ready," he told German broadcaster ARD.

"We're offering Iran immediate negotiations about the nuclear programme, I hope [the offer] is accepted,"

He said this is a "key prerequisite" for solving the conflict, to ensure Iran "presents no danger to the region, for the state of Israel or to Europe".

Number killed in Iranian strikes rises to 10

The number of people reported killed after Iranian attacks in Israel has risen to 10.

Dozens more have been injured, with Israeli media reporting more than 200 people have been hurt.
